It took a few weeks of constant mind games, late nights, fighting, making up and silent treatments before I finally managed to move out. I had to leave. He had broken up with me, slipped into my bed at 4 a.m., didn’t talk to me the next day and then called me later like nothing had happened. I couldn’t take it any more. He volunteered to move the furniture for me, help me get set up. Sebastian brought me dinner, washed the clothes, helped put David to bed and offered to unpack anything I needed. As he walked out he held me, kissed me, told me he loved me and that this would be a good thing for me. David and I alone, in a 400 sq. foot apartment in a questionable area, because it was all I could afford. I was scared but knew that I couldn’t keep following Sebastian where he was going.

It took a few months to get settled. David and I started a new routine. Daycare, work, cook, play, sleep, repeat. Sebastian and I spoke every day. He was busy, lots of new friends, lots of parties, always running errands. He would come over and watch movies but always left by 10 p.m. The few times I went over to his apartment to hang out, there were always people. His roommate never seemed bothered. I didn’t live there so I guess it wasn’t my place to say anything. On my 21st birthday, he wanted to take me out. Celebrate. He didn’t turn 21 for a month, so we headed to a nice restaurant near the apartment. All excited, I order a drink. Sebastian scowls. I get my fruity concoction that probably included 1 drop of alcohol and excitedly take a sip. “So you’re just going to order a drink when you know I can’t?” Sebastian says disgusted with my excitement.

I immediately feel ashamed. I should have been more thoughtful. Why did I do that? I spent the rest of the meal barely able to swallow. I couldn’t finish the drink, how could I? Seeing me uncomfortable made him perk up. “Sorry, just embarrassing.” he said while gobbling down his meal. “We should hurry up, I’ve got plans later.”, Sebastian said smiling brightly. “Oh I didn’t realize you made plans for later.” I said, attempting to swallow over the huge lump in my throat. We finished our meal and drove back to his apartment. We walked in together, I asked quietly what his plans were and he simply replied, “Oh hanging out with friends. Have a great night. Happy birthday.”

“I really have a bad feeling about this. I think maybe you should just hang out here, or come back to my place.” I said quietly. I pleaded with him, I had a funny feeling and I really just wanted him to stay. “Oh. It’s no big deal. I’ll call you tomorrow.” He kissed me quickly and I left. I went to my car, picked up David, hours earlier than I had planned. Went home and barely slept. The next morning I took David to daycare and headed back to bed, since I had planned to need the day off. I was awoken by a call from Sebastians mother. “Can you run over to Sebastian’s apartment and see if he overslept? He didn’t show up at work and they let us know.” This was not the first time this had happened since he moved into this new place. I always found him asleep, phone dead and no idea what time it was.

I arrived at his apartment, and there was Sebastian’s truck, in his normal spot. I knocked on the door. No answer. I called, no answer. I called his roommate, straight to voicemail. Now I know something is wrong. I go over to the leasing office, since his roommate works for the apartment complex, and they haven’t seen him. This isn’t good. We call his supervisor, I met him a couple of times at the apartment. The supervisor shows up, takes me aside and tells me that the apartment was raided last night. “What do you mean raided? Like by the police?” I asked not really understanding. “Yes, apparently Sebastian has been dealing drugs out of the apartment. They managed to get one of his buyers to plant some bills. Then the police came in and found the bills in his pocket. There were also other drugs all throughout the apartment. They’re both in jail.”

Holy shit. What an idiot. How do I tell his mother?

I called around and found out where they were being held and their bail hearing was at 1 p.m. I called Sebastian’s mother and told her what had happened. She agreed to come up immediately and meet me for the hearing. We sat in the court room while the televised in the local jail. Probably ten other people came up before they called Sebastian. He was there on the screen looking so small and tired. The judge quickly explained what he was charged with possession with intent to distribute, and set his bail at $250,000. With that he was gone. His mother and I left, devastated and wondering what the hell we were going to do.

Who was this man? What had he done? How had I not seen this coming? He had done some drugs, that I had seen. I know that he was curious and that made me uncomfortable but he seemed so confident that you just kind of made it seem ok. What was he going to do? How was I going to help him through this? Would he lose everything? So many questions and I have no idea what I’m doing. I worried non-stop about what he was going through. My every thought was still about him, all of the time. I should have been mad, I should have been pissed but I was just worried. The next two months were insane.
