Sebastian seemed arrogant, too tall, too skinny and barely said two words. I was dating his friend, who swore I just had to meet this guy and by the end of the lunch I was thinking “ok well that’s done.” There was nothing else that I needed to know and no need to ever see him again.
Two days later, here I am stranded, in desperate need of back-up and non to be found. I called everyone I know, but it is 2 o’clock on a Thursday, and we’re adults, so everyone is at work. I call my boyfriend, the best friend, and beg for assistance. “Logan, I need help. My ex has been calling my friends and family to track me down and I need someone to drive me to confront him and ask him to stop.” It turns out that all my relationship decisions haven’t been awesome. Well Logan wasn’t able to come, so who does he suggest? Yeah huh. “I mean Sebastian is such a great guy, he should be done working by now and if he can, I’m sure he’ll help.” So out of pure desperation, I called him. To my surprise, he said sure and met me 20 minutes later.
I spent the next hour telling him my crazy story of my ex and how he had gone from the best boyfriend to a scary stranger in the matter of weeks. It was almost like once we got comfortable and he felt that I had been successfully trapped in his hold that he was able to show his true colors. Sebastian sat there intently listening to my story of how I had fallen, realized what he was and successfully escaped. I changed jobs, cars, apartments, phone numbers, emails, everything to keep him out of my life and here I was having to tell him to go away, with a stranger as my support. Strong, independent woman, right?
We went, confronted my ex and Sebastian stayed respectfully distant but close enough to help the entire time. After, Sebastian wished me well, got in his car and left me wondering, “Had I been wrong? Maybe he’s a good guy after all.”
Fast forward three months. Logan, Sebastian and I do everything together. All our free time is booked going to movies, walking around downtown, driving through the country, all those things that young adults do when they think they’re free, wise and oh so grown up. Then, Logan was moving out of town. Can’t say that I was too upset because I knew our relationship was just buying time until he left and in August he was gone. Then it was just us.
